Natural abundance of N-15 and C-13 in fish tissues and the use of stable isotopes as dietary protein tracers in rainbow trout and gilthead sea bream ArchiMer

For developing efficient diets, two sets of experiments examined whether the use and allocation of dietary protein can be traced by labelling with stable isotopes (N-15 and C-13) in two culture fish (Oncorhynchus mykiss and Sparus aurata). In the first experiment, natural abundance and tissue distribution of these isotopes were determined, by measuring the delta C-13 and delta N-15 values by isotopic ratio mass spectrometry, in fingerlings (14-17 g) adapted to diets differing in the percentage of fish meal replacement by plant protein sources. High levels of vegetable oils in plant protein-rich diets fed to gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.): growth performance, muscle fatty acid profiles and histological alterations of target tissues ArchiMer

The feasibility of fish oil (FO) replacement by vegetable oils (VO) was investigated in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.) in a growth trial conducted for the duration of 8 months. Four isolipidic and isoproteic diets rich in plant proteins were Supplemented with L-lysine (0-55%) and soya lecithin (1%). Added oil was either FO (control) or a blend of VO, replacing 33% (33VO diet), 66% (66VO diet) and 100% (VO diet) of FO. No detrimental effects on growth performance were found with the partial FO replacement, but feed intake and growth rates were reduced by about 10% in fish fed the VO diet. Combined replacement of fish meal and oil in practical diets for fast growing juveniles of gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata L.): Networking of systemic and local components of GH/IGF axis ArchiMer

Growth performance and growth regulatory pathways were examined in juvenile gilthead sea bream fed diets containing largely plant-based ingredients. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic extruded diets with a low level (20%) of fish meal inclusion were formulated with graded levels of a vegetable oil mixture (17:58:25 of rapeseed: linseed: palm oils) replacing fish oil at 33, 66 and 100% (33VO, 66VO and VO diets). The aim of the study was to determine whether changes in the tissue fatty acid (FA) profile follows a simple test dilution model after changing the dietary oil sources in gilthead sea bream. A 14-month trial was conducted with juvenile fish of 18 g initial body weight fed either a fish oil-based diet (FO diet) or vegetable oils replacing 33% (33VO) and 66% (66VO) of fish oil. The trial included 3 months feeding a fish oil finishing diet to follow the restoration of the FA profile with the FO diet. Fish oil replacement with/without a finishing phase of fish oil re-feeding did not affect growth and all groups reached 520-531 g body weight. Effect of genistein-enriched diets on the endocrine process of gametogenesis and on reproduction efficiency of the rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss ArchiMer

Three practical diets were formulated to contain 0, 500, or 1000 ppm genistein. The three diets were distributed for 1 year to groups of rainbow trout undergoing their first gametogenesis and until spawning. Growth performance of rainbow trout was not affected by dietary treatments. Plasma cholesterol levels were equivalent between groups. In males, a slight but constant induction of vitellogenin (VTG) synthesis and a decrease in testosterone levels were observed. Regulation of feed intake, growth, nutrient and energy utilisation in European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed high fat diets ArchiMer

Three practical isoproteic (54% protein) diets were formulated to contain graded levels of crude fat (diet L: 10%, diet M: 20% and diet H: 30%). Each diet was assigned unrestrictedly to three and restrictedly to two replicate groups of fish (IBW 243 g). In unrestricted groups, increasing the dietary lipid level led to a significant decrease in voluntary feed intake without affecting growth rate. Effects of rapeseed meal-glucosinolates on thyroid metabolism and feed utilization in rainbow trout ArchiMer

Two rapeseed meals (RM1 and RM2), containing glucosinolates at a concentration of 26 and 40 mumol/g, respectively, were incorporated at increasing levels (10, 20, and 30% for RM1 and 30 and 50% for RM2) in diets of juvenile rainbow trout. Disturbances in the thyroid axis appeared after 14 days of feeding (with a dietary incorporation level of 10%). The dietary supplementation with T-3 or iodine induced an increase in plasma T-3 levels, compared to that in fish fed the RM diets, and reduced the deleterious effect of RM on growth. Protein sparing effect of dietary lipids in common dentex (Dentex dentex): a comparative study with sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) ArchiMer

The common dentex (Dentex dentex) is a sparid fish which is considered a suitable candidate for Mediterranean aquaculture. A seven-weeks feeding trial was conducted over the summer period with common dentex, sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). All three species were fed to visual satiety with two practical diets with varying crude protein and crude fat levels (55 % protein, 9 % lipids; 46 % protein, 17 % lipids). Effect of long-term feeding with a plant protein mixture based diet on growth and body/fillet quality traits of large rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) ArchiMer

Whole body amino acid composition of European seabass (Dicentrarchus labrax), gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) and turbot (Psetta maxima) with an estimation of their IAA requirement profiles ArchiMer

The amino acid compositions of whole body tissue of European seabass, gilthead seabream and turbot of two different size classes were determined. No significant differences were detected between species and the composition was not affected by body size. Based on whole body indispensable amino acids (IAA) to total IAA ratios (A/E ratios), the IAA requirement profiles for the three species were estimated and compared to data available to date for some amino acids, obtained using dose-response curves.
